Telenor special number bidders celebrate new school facilities opening

.New school facilities built with MMK 156.7 million profits donated to Myat Lay Yone monastic school

January 20, 2017, Yangon – Telenor Myanmar Limited (“Telenor”) andits special number bidders today joined parliamentarians and village elders incelebratingthe opening ofnew school facilities in Myat Lay Yone Monastic School in Kwan Chan Gone Township.The event was attended by Yangon Region Parliament Speaker U Tin Maung Htun,members of Parliament from lower and upper houses, and Yangon Regional Parliament, and Caroline Yin Yin Htay, Chief Financial Officer at Telenor.

The building was funded by the bidders who participated in the Telenor’s second special numbers auction held in March 2016 in Mandalay. The auction netted a total of MMK 357.9 million, from 43 special numbers auctioned. A total of MMK 228.9 million profits generated at the second auction was donated to Myat Lay Yone monastic school and Thin Kha YineOrphnage in Bago.Myat Lay Yone monastic school received MMK 156.7 million. Telenor has pledged to donate all profits above the reserve price per special number to selected social organizations. Name of recipient social organization is also announced prior to each auction.

“We are pleased to note that with the new facilities Myat Lay Yone will enable to accept more children from nearby villages and help them pursue higher education. We truly appreciate the support and willingness of our bidders to contribute to social organizations and community in need,” said Caroline Yin Yin Htay.

In addition to the new school building, a well-equipped digital literacy centre has also been established with the donation. Telenor will explore further possibilities to support Myat Lay Yone in order to fully utilize the centre and help strengthen digital literacy for the students.

“The school building previously didn’t have adequate space and facilities to accommodate growing number of students. We all are so delighted to have new school facilities and we sincerely like to thank bidders and Telenor for making this happen,” said U Than Htun, member of the monastic school administration committee.

About Myat Lay Yone Monastic School

Myat Lay Yone Monastic School is situated in Myat Lay Yone Part, Taw Khayan (West) Village in Kwan Chan Gone Township, Yangon Region. The school currently serves 140 students, and is registered under the Ministry of Religious Affairs. The school initially started as a summer reading session in 2011 and gradually upgraded as a post-primary school as of today. The school started offeringup to Grade 8 courses since early 2016, but has lack of capacity to accommodate a large number of students.
