Telenor offers internship opportunities for Myanmar university students

August 17, 2016- Yangon – Telenor Myanmar Limited (“Telenor”) recently collaborated with several Myanmar universities, where through internship programmes it will offer students working exposure related to their field of study.

Students completing their final year of study in Hmawbi Technological University, West Yangon Technological University, Thanhlyin Technological University, and Myanmar Management Degree College can apply to join Telenor’s internship program that will commence in October this year. Telenor will continue to expand the collaboration with more universities in Myanmar in the future.

As part of introducing its internship program Telenor held a series of awareness sessions at the universities in the second and third week of August. The sessions, conducted by Telenor’s local experts, also shared knowledge on trending mobile communications technology and on enhancing employability.

“We are delighted to give university students an ‘insider’ opportunity through our internship program that will hopefully bridge their academic experience and with real workplace insights. Through this programme, interns will work alongside Telenor’s experienced local and international colleagues on on-going projects, across a variety of functions. This will be the start of a long-term initiative to work with bright young Myanmar talent, to create more industry-ready talents for the Myanmar workforce,” said Anne Birgitte Kverum, Chief People Officer (CPO) at Telenor Myanmar.

Telenor’s internship programme will last between 1 and 3 months during which time interns will be on-boarded to the company’s ways of working, provided soft skills needed for workplace collaboration, guided by an intern supervisor and by Telenor’s Learning and Development teams, and finally awarded internship completion certificates. Telenor will offer internship opportunities across its business functions including human resources, finance, business operations, technology, marketing, corporate communications.

Ma Myint Myat Twel Tar, a final year student at Thanhlyin Technological University said, “It is encouraging to discover more opportunities to enhance my skills and apply what I have learned, and I’m very keenly interested in the Telenor’s internship program. It will really be a challenging and rewarding experience for me.”

Open and winning culture

Telenor currently employs more than 600 employees and has more than 220 local and international partners in its supply chain. Telenor today serves more than 17 million customers in Myanmar’s all states and regions through its own network of thousands of points-of-sale, creating employment opportunities for communities, including for hundreds of local youths.

One of Telenor’s key strategic ambitions in Myanmar is to nurture an organisation rooted in an open and winning culture. “Open, because we have a low hierarchy structure where chain of command is short and empowerment is high. Local talents are groomed with skills from expert colleagues and quickly encouraged to think and act independently. Winning, because we focus on creating a performance driven culture that measures ourselves on how well we are doing and how we continuously strive to be better at what we are doing,” explains Kverum.

Telenor was the first company to introduce industry changing workplace innovations like 6-months maternity leave for our colleagues who are mothers, and flexible working hours and shorter in-office hours. The company constantly drives initiatives that ensure all employees regularly participate in market activities which typically are combined with social responsibility activities. “We hope our unique culture and way of working will appeal and give good insight to our interns in this batch, and in future batches,” Kverum added.
