Telenor Myanmar provided MMK 163.49 million (MMK 1634.9 Lakh) to respond to recent flooding in Mandalay, Magway and Bago regions

  • At least 30,000 affected people will receive relief food items and drinking water

3rd August, 2016, Yangon – Telenor Myanmar Limited (“Telenor”) today provided MMK 163.49 million (MMK 1634.9 Lakh) aiming to provide relief assistance to at least 30,000 people in flood-affected areas along the rivers in Mandalay, Magway and Bago regions. The assistance, provided for the second time in response to frequent flooding during this monsoon, will be channelled through Telenor’s local partner Network Activities Group (NAG).




“Many parts of Myanmar are facing recurrent flooding that is disrupting lives of thousands of people across the country. Our thoughts are with all those affected by the flooding, and through our partner NAG we will provide relief assistance to affected-people who are in need most,” said said Khin Pyait Wonn Thaw Tar, Telenor Myanmar’s Corporate Responsibility Lead.

According to the government’s Department of Relief and Resettlement about 100,000 people in Kachin State, and Sagaing, Mandalay, Magway, Bago and Ayeyarwady regions have been impacted by the flooding as of 2nd August. All of the currently affected regions except the latter are in the middle and upper part of Myanmar. The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology has also alerted regions in the lower part of Myanmar to be prepared for potential flooding.

As a responsible mobile operator Telenor is at the forefront of helping communities affected by natural disasters, and Telenor will continue to provide support in the flood affected areas based on their needs. In July, Telenor funded MMK 86.4 million (MMK 864 Lakh) to provide life-saving food items, drinking water and cash assistance, through NAG, to nearly 27,000 flood affected people in Minbya, Kyauktaw and Mrauk-U townships in Rakhine. In addition, Telenor also provided MMK 500 free credit to its subscribers in Rakhine. So far, Telenor has provided more than MMK 250 million (MMK 2500 Lakh) in response to flooding in July and August. In 2015, Telenor and its sister companies also provided over MMK 500 million (MMK 5,000 Lakh) and USD 100,000 in funding for flood relief to various partners.

Telenor’s humanitarian relief support for disaster-affected communities including response to the flooding in Myanmar is initiated as a part of its Corporate Responsibility programme. In addition to disaster responses, Telenor’s Corporate Responsibility initiative also includes Telenor’s Light Houses for promoting digital literacy; Myanmar Mobile Education Project providing non-formal education to underprivileged children and mHealth for maternal and child health information app. Telenor also began Special Numbers Auctions that act as a platform to generate donations for various social organizations, including monastic schools and orphanages.
