Benefits generated from Telenor's special auction channelled to two beneficiaries

    May 10, 2016, Yangon – Telenor Myanmar Limited (“Telenor”) today organized a donation handover ceremony between the bidders of the second Telenor special auction and the beneficiaries, Myat Lay Yone Monastic School and Thin Kha Yine Orphanage.

    As announced before, the auction generated benefits of MMK 2,289 lakhs (228.9 million) were today channeled to build a new school building in Myat Lay Yone Monastic School in Kwan Chan Gone Township and a digital education center in Thin Kha Yine Orphnage in Bago Township.

    “We are deeply thankful to all who came to bid and contribute to our education programme for underprivileged and poor children. We are supporting underprivileged children in Myanmar through a number of initiatives including channeling benefits from special auctions. It is our honour as well for having opportunity to bridge well-wishers and monastic schools in support of promoting education of disadvantaged kids,” said Petter Furberg, CEO of Telenor Myanmar.

    Telenor held its second auction on 25th March, 2016 in Mandalay. In total 43 special numbers were auctioned and the highest single bid of the day was received for 09 799999999, sold for MMK 802 lakhs (80.2 million).

    About Myat Lay Yone Monastic School

    Myat Lay Yone Monastic School is situated in Myat Lay Yone Part, Taw Khayan (West) Village in Kwan Chan Gone Township, Yangon Region. The school currently serves 140 students, and is registered under the Ministry of Religious Affairs. The school initially started as a summer reading session in 2011 and gradually developed as a post primary school as of today. Beginning 2016, the school will extend until Grade 8, but has no capacity to accommodate a large number of students without walls and protection from the weather.

    About Thin Kha Yine Orphanage

    Thin Kha Yine Orphanage is situated in Gyobingauk, Bago. Over 250 orphans are taken care by the monks in the orphanage. The orphanage was founded by the current principle A Shin U Thu Ma Na in 2008 and is registered under the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement. The orphanage supports the education of the orphans as well as the kids from the nearby villages. Currently, only primary school building is situated in the compound and children need to travel other villages to join the middle school.
