Digital Classrooms

According to a recent Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report, published by UNESCO Institute for Statistics Database (UIS), there are 2 million out-of-school primary, lower secondary and upper secondary levels who live in Myanmar.

The report also highlights why education, and in particular getting out of school children back to school, is vital to achieve the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals.

The report also highlights why education, and in particular getting out of school children back to school, is vital to achieve the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals. Telenor Myanmar introduced a “Digital Education Project” with the purpose of making primary education accessible for underprivileged, out of school children across the country. This project is in partnership with Monastic Education Development Group (MEDG) with 40 schools in Rakhine, Mon, Kachin, and Shan States and Tanintharyi, Yangon, Mandalay, Magwe, Bago, Sagaing and Ayeyarwaddy Regions. Three percent of the total students attending in those schools are non-Buddhists.

“Tech Classrooms” were established with Telenor Myanmar’s co-funding and technical support, alongside Educate a Child (EAC). Live lessons are delivered from PhaungDaw Oo studio in Mandalay and broadcast to all participating schools nationwide. Students study 2 hours per day and 6 days per week.

The Digital Education Project specifically aims to:

  • Provide quality non-formal primary education (NFPE) to Out-of-School Children from 40 schools
  • 1000 students gain quality education which is equivalent with government primary curriculum before end of this year (2017)
  • Create a potential education opportunity for Out-of-School Children
  • Retain qualified in rural teachers by providing teacher training, financial support and technical training opportunities
  • Prove Child Center Approach is applicable in both physical classrooms and in online “Tech Classrooms”
  • Use Telenor Myanmar’s largest national network for socially beneficial purposes
