July 6, 2015, Yangon – Telenor Myanmar Limited (Telenor) today partnered with OperaSoftware, the makers of the Opera Mini web browser, to conduct the 17th edition of its monthly Net Monday event.
Telenor aims to affordable mobile and internet services to customers in Myanmar, and has partnered with Opera since November 2014. Approximately 100people joined the Net Monday event which covered the topic to more efficient browsing with Opera.
“We believe that mobile connectivity is essential for everyone and with the mobile internet comes “Net Monday is a key activity for us to meet regularly with customers, and further our ‘Internet For All’ mission in Myanmar. Telenor brings mobile voice and internet services to millions of customers in Myanmar today.We estimate that from this base, 65% are already data users, and about 60% use a smartphone. ,” said Mr Sharad Mehrotra, Chief Marketing Officer of Telenor Myanmar.
“The cooperation with Opera enables customers to access faster and more affordable internet from their mobile devices, via Opera Mini browser. Customers can access all local websites with Opera in both Zawgyi and Unicode font, for example – further extending our promise of enabling internet for all customers in Myanmar.”
At the event, Opera released its state of the mobile web report for Myanmar today. The report is based on the aggregated data gathered from Opera Mini users in the country.
“A majority, 87% of Opera Mini users from Myanmar use smartphones. Android is the most popular OS with 85%. This high number of smartphone users is strikingly different than other emerging markets, which still have a significant number of basic-phone users,” said Sunil Kamath, Vice President for South Asia at Opera Software.
“There has been an overall growth of internet users in Myanmar. The number of Opera Mini users has increased by over 330% in the past year.This growth has been fuelled by the availability of cost-effective smartphones and educative initiatives taken by mobile operators such as Telenor Myanmar. Affordable data plans are also a key driver in encouraging first-time users to go online from their mobile phones. I’m confident that this trend will continue and more people will be empowered with the power of the web,” he added.

Net Monday is a monthly industry event organized by Telenor Myanmar to promote a rich dialogue on topics relevant to the growing digital and online community in Myanmar. Each event brings together a panel of local and international subject matter experts to discuss and debate specific topics of interest to local programmers, web designers, bloggers, developers, technical experts, and representatives from local or international Internet and technology companies. Previous events were held in universities such as Dagon University, Hmawbi Technological University, Magway University, and Pathein University and in various venues across the country.
