30 May, 2016 - Yangon

  • Presence in the second most populated state underscores commitment to serving mass market customers in Myanmar
  • Now serving customers with more than 5,300 sites in all states, regions, and territories

May 27, 2016, Yangon - Telenor Myanmar Limited (“Telenor”) today announced the launch of its network in Sittwe in Rakhine state, underscoring the company’s commitment to deliver affordable mobile internet and voice services to mass market customers in Myanmar. Telenor now serves customers in all states and regions, and territories, and today has a network footprint of more than 5,300 sites - the largest mobile network in Myanmar. The company is expected to rollout at least 7,000 towers by end 2016 and will continue to invest in adding capacity and optimising quality in areas already covered by its network to improve the quality of the services.

“Our commitment is to deliver the most affordable and quality mobile services to all the people throughout Myanmar. We faced some initial challenges in rolling out our network in Rakhine, but we excited about our network and distribution presence here today, and will continue expanding both areas in months to come, to serve customers in both urban and rural areas alike,” said Petter Furberg, Chief Executive Officer at Telenor Myanmar.

“Connectivity is still a major challenge in Rakhine and the expansion of our network in Rakhine is expected to help stimulate growth of the State,” he said. Rakhine is the eighth largest of Myanmar’s States and Regions, and with 6.2 percent of the total population it is the second most populated State in Myanmar, according to the Myanmar census 2014 data.

Telenor employees take the ‘Blue Wave’ to Sittwe

Telenor has deployed more than 800 points-of-sale (POS) in Rakhine state, including nearly 600 in Sittwe itself. It works with 4 main distributors in the state, and has 1 Franchised-Owned, Franchised-Operated (FOFO) store in the capital city so far. Rapid expansion of the network indicates the increase number of POS, distributors and FOFO in Rakhine State.

As part of its launch festivities, Mr Furberg was joined by more than 50 Telenor colleagues at its traditional “Blue Wave” activities in Sittwe, meeting customers and dealers on the streets of the city to introduce the service and gather feedback on customer experience. Famous vocalists including Phyu Phyu Kaw Thein, Wai La and Eaint Chit joined the entertainment held as a part of Blue Wave activities in Sittwe.
