Telenor’s network launched in Tanintharyi Division

28 August, 2015 - Yangon

Dawei, August 27, 2015 – Telenor Myanmar Limited (“Telenor”) today announced its network expansion to Dawei in Tanintharyi Division to emphasize its continued commitment to provide affordable mobile internet and voice services in Myanmar. Tanintharyi becomes the 13th major area under Telenor’s coverage, joining Mandalay, Yangon, Sagaing, Bago, Magway, Ayeyarwaddy, Kayin, Mon, Kachin, Shan, Kayah and in union territory Nay Pyi Taw.

“Although we are facing some challenges in the rainy reason, we are doing our best to continue the pace of our network growth. We have gradually expanded our services to more town and cities to underscore our mission to serve for everyone with affordable voice and data. We are also committed to continue growing and optimizing our network at the places where we have been launched,” said Petter Furberg, Chief Executive Officer of Telenor Myanmar.

He added, “We have started to use innovative ways and world-class solutions to provide more capacity in our network in big cities such as Yangon and Mandalay. We are working hard to improve the quality of our network in the cities: in Yangon we now have more than 811 sites, while in Mandalay we now have 521 sites turned on.”

“In addition, we are also providing our customers with the most affordable prices in the market. Recently, we lowered voice tariffs from 25 Kyats to 18 Kyat (on-net) and 23 Kyat (off-net) with our latest Super Pwar plan. And with more than 10 million users in the country, our customers are now on Myanmar’s fastest growing, 100% 3G network.” Mr Furberg added.

Telenor today has a network footprint of more than 2,700 sites, covering more than 50% of populated areas across Myanmar. The company is expected to rollout between 3,500 and 4,000 towers by end 2015.

Telenor’s network in Dawei/Tanintharyi was launched with 16 towers in Dawei and 60 in Tanintharyi Division. Telenor has more than 700 points-of-sale (POS) in Dawei and 900 POS in Myeik. Also opened as part of the company’s traditional ‘Blue Wave’ activities was Telenor’s Franchised-Operated (FOFO) store.

“I’m so pleased to be a partner of Telenor to enable my community in Dawei to access affordable mobile internet and voice services from Telenor,” said Ma Win Win Khaing, an authorized distributor of Telenor in Dawei. “I believe my community will gain uncountable knowledge and information through internet by using Telenor. I’m happy to be part of this telecom sector development which can enhance the development of our country too,” she added.

Blue Wave & Charity live show in Dawei

As part of network launching activity, Telenor also celebrated its traditional market engagement activity called “Blue Wave” in Dawei. Telenor employees visited around Dawei to interact with customers. They also visited Dawei home for the aged to donate SIMs and handsets.

Unlike traditional Blue Wave events, Telenor included a small charity show to raise funds for communities in flood-hits areas in Myanmar. At the event, attendees contributed a total of MMK 10 million to help the flood victims. All the contribution from locals will be transferred to the Network Activities Group (NAG), Telenor partner relief agency. The donation by Dawei residents will be doubled by Telenor Myanmar in order to assist the recovery process for flood-hit areas through NAG.

“We were deeply sad about what has happened in Myanmar. Telenor Myanmar together with other business units had contributed for the emergency reliefs through our partnered agencies. Today, we also would like to celebrate our network opening ceremony in different way to help the victims. So we included this charity program. All the donation received from Dawei residents will go directly to the victims through our partner relief agency (NAG), “said Khin Wut Hmone Myint, Head of Market Engagement from Marketing Department of Telenor Myanmar.

The live show included entertainment by famous singers, R Zar Ni, Phyu Phyu Kyaw Thein, Irene Zin Mar Myint and others junior singers.
