On 10 December 2020, the Posts and Telecommunications Department (PTD) under the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC) has ordered blocking of a named website which, according to Myanmar authorities, circulate “fake news”. The directive is based on Section 77 of the Telecommunications Law.
Telenor Myanmar has complied with the directive, under protest, and has pointed out its concerns regarding the directive’s discrepancy with international human rights. The company is bound by law to keep any further details about the directive confidential.
Customers in Myanmar trying to access the affected URL will be directed to a landing page stating that the site cannot be reached due to Myanmar government instruction.
Telenor Myanmar maintains that the company’s business is to provide a telecommunications channel and we do not, and should not, select or alter the content of communications in our channel.
The company continues its dialogue with authorities for such website blockings, seeking to limit or lift restrictions and encourage the government of Myanmar to increase transparency for the public.
