All Telenor companies work daily with supply chain sustainability. Our aim is to raise the standard and make a social impact in the local market. We strive for continuous improvement in our own operations and towards our suppliers. In Myanmar we are aware that there are significant risks related to the supply chain.

In Telenor, our Supplier Conduct Principles (SCP) is the key document for all contracting parties. An ‘Agreement on Responsible Business Conduct’ legally obligates the supplier to comply with the SCP. Professional inspectors are carrying out inspections of suppliers in accordance with written standards and best practices. Telenor is committed to working with suppliers to drive continuous improvement.

Identification of risks, mapping of local laws and getting an overview of the general standards for health, safety & security, environment and human rights, were amongst key activities early on. Extensive screening, due diligence and background checks are conducted for the contracting partners in the pre-selection process. We cooperate closely with our contracting partners.

Other key focus areas include capacity building and close follow-up from the start on the suppliers on issues related to health and safety, working conditions, underage labour and anti-corruption. We are working preventively in this area and have to be prepared for detecting and mitigating non-conformities to our firm requirements for responsible business conduct in the supply chain.

Telenor Myanmar invests in ongoing capacity building in its supply chain, with training focusing on health and safety, road safety and anti-corruption. Training and awareness tools translated into Burmese language are distributed to main suppliers. Site visits and inspections of suppliers and sub-suppliers commenced in 2013, and will continue during the network roll-out.

A Practical Guide to Help Prevent Corruption in the Supply Chain

Telenor is internationally active in discussing and finding solutions to common challenges facing the industry. One of the key achievements last year was a guide to help preventing corruption in the supply chain, developed by UN Global Compact and Telenor, with input from UNGC Advisory Group members. The guide is used in supplier training and outlines preventive measures that companies are encouraged to have in place to minimize corruption risk.
