Telenor to provide ‘Safe Internet’ education to over 70,000 youths, parentsthis year

  • Telenor’s employees, State Liaison Officers and Light House entrepreneurs volunteer to conduct safe Internet trainings across the country

Telenor Myanmar launched a series of awareness raising sessions in Yangon starting 11 October for youths and students to stay safe while using Internet. No (1) Basic Education High School in Dagon Township hosted a ‘Safe Internet’ session yesterday and similar sessions will be conducted rest of the year at government and private schools in Yangon.

“It is imperative for everyone to play a part in creating a better Internet. Through our safe Internet trainings we aim to serve that purpose and by the end of this year we expect to educate at least 70,000 students, youths and their parents,” said Min Thu, head of Telenor’s Business Sustainability.

Telenor organized similar trainings at government high schools in Mandalay in September this year. Together with in-house experienced trainers, voluntary Telenor’s employees that has been trained particularly for conducting safe internet sessions, will participate in the upcoming sessions.

Telenor’s ‘Safe Internet’ trainings teaches children about the benefits of using Internet (educational purpose), and raise awareness of how to stay safe online and handle potential risks such as information theft, cyber bulling, grooming, sexting and hate speech.

As part of its ‘Safe Internet’ initiative Telenor introduced an educational video series ‘Be Smart Use Heart’ in September aiming to educate people to stay safe on internet and fully utilize opportunities available online. Videos are available for all on Telenor Myanmar Facebook and Youtube channels. Telenor launched ‘Safe Internet’ initiative in August last year conducting Safe Internet talks at a number of government and private high schools in Yangon, and private and monastic schools in Mandalay during 2016. Moreover, Telenor educated children, teenagers and parents in rural areas about the safe internet with the support of the company’s State Liaison Officers and Light House digital literacy education center entrepreneurs.
