Telenor’s year-end analysis reveals that the company’s network carried a record 2.2 million text messages at the peak time of the SMS traffic on New Year eve - between 11pm on 31st December 2017 and 2:00am on 1st January 2018.
The text messages number is close to 160% up compared to the last year’s peak time when 1.4 million messages were sent. Furthermore, the analysis finds the SMS traffic at the peak time on New Year eve was 208% higher than normal daily usage.
“New Year eve celebration is getting popular among Myanmar people and it becomes accustomed to them sending New Year wishes to friends and family as we enter into the New Year. This has been proved by higher SMS and data traffics during the peak hours on the eve. Our analysis shows SMS is still one of the most effective channels of communications and it will remain one of most used communications channels in the coming years. However, with improved network coverage throughout Myanmar we are witnessing higher data adoption in the country. Our focus in 2018 will be about providing the best customer experience and we keep optimizing our network to continuously deliver improved voice and data services,” said Lars Erik Tellmann, Chief Executive Officer of Telenor Myanmar.
During the same peak hours on New Year eve Facebook traffic was 40% higher than normal daily usage, while other data traffic including Viber and BeeTalks was 29% higher than normal usage. As normal daily data usage of Myanmar customers has already been similar to that of users in other developed markets the peak hours Facebook traffic indicated significant usage increase, Tellmann added.
