Over 4800 people in Ye Township will benefit from Telenor Myanmar’s donation of 19.5 million Kyats
Telenor Myanmar have contributed more than 36 million Kyat to this year monsoon flood response in Myanmar
August 22nd 2019, Yangon – Telenor Myanmar strengthens its contribution to humanitarian aid and disaster relief as it provides 19.5 million kyat worth of life-saving food items and drinking water to people displaced by the floods in Ye Township of Mon State. This is a second flood response initiative implemented in partnership with Telenor’s local partner organization, Network Activities Group (NAG) for 2019. The donation will cover drinking water and food supplies such as rice, oil, beans and salt for over 4,800 people for seven days in Ye township.
“Telenor Myanmar is deeply saddened by the plight of the people in Ye. As one of the townships severely affected by the heavy flooding in Mon State, Ye needs all the help it could get. We hope our humble contribution would help the communities recover and return to their usual activities,” said Min Thu, Head of Business Sustainability and Special Projects of Telenor Myanmar.
Seasonal flooding occurs in Mon state due to heavy rainfall during the second week of August this year led to many villages being submerged in water. Water levels have not yet subsided, leaving over 63,000 displaced people seeking shelter in the 13 evacuation sites opened to respond to this natural disaster. According to UNOCHA’s (United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs) flood reports, the monsoon rains also triggered landslides in the region which resulted in over 70 casualties.
“Flooding began since the beginning of August in several areas of Southern Myanmar; Eastern Bago, Mon State, and Tanintharyi areas. Among those regions, people in Ye township were impacted the worst amongst these due to the higher intensity and longer duration of the rains. We have carefully selected the most impacted area for the flood response together with our regional employees, corporate responsibility colleagues, and NAG team,” Naing Myo Mon, Business Head for Southern Region of Telenor Myanmar.
Telenor Myanmar hopes its contribution can facilitate the safe return of those affected to their villages and help them begin their rehabilitation. Telenor Myanmar was the first Telenor operator to respond to this year monsoon flooding in Kachin state and total of 36.5 million Kyat have been contributed to Kachin and Mon state as of today. As a responsible organization, Telenor Myanmar has also provided emergency relief assistance to flood affected areas as necessary and since 2015 to date, Telenor has provided nearly than 1.06 Billion Kyats in response to natural disasters in Myanmar and benefited nearly 187,000.
