Expanding footprint in remote and border areas underscores the company’s commitment to serving all people of Myanmar wherever they live
Now serving customers with more than 6,900 sites in all states, regions, and territories
Concurrent ‘SIM Registration Day’ also helps users to register easily and quickly
Telenor Myanmar Limited (“Telenor”) today marked its network expansion to Eastern Shan State and Tachileik, a border town with Thailand. Recent expansion of its network footprint to ethnic and border areas underscores the company’s commitment to serving all people of Myanmar. With more than 6,900 towers Telenor is operating the largest and fastest growing data network in Myanmar, serving about 18 million users in all states, regions, and territories.
“This expansion marks our commitment to serving all people of Myanmar whenever they live. More than 30 percent of our customers are in the ethnic states and while we are continuing our network expansion in rural and ethnic areas we are also focusing on delivering quality data experience to all of our users,” said Lars Tellmann, Chief Executive Officer at Telenor Myanmar.
“Connectivity is still a major challenge in ethnic states and while we are positively impressed with the support we gain from all parts of Myanmar to our rollout there still is a need to improve infrastructure sharing, which is a core building block for rapid deployment of services,” he said.
Telenor is committed to bringing mobile connectivity to 90% of Myanmar’s population within 5 years. Currently Telenor’s network covers more than 86% of Myanmar’s population. The company is expected to rollout at least 7,000 towers by end 2016 and will continue to invest in adding capacity and optimising quality in areas already covered by its network to improve the quality of the services.
‘Blue Wave’ and ‘SIM Registration Day’ in Eastern Shan
In Eastern Shan Telenor has deployed more than 800 points-of-sale (POS). It works with 2 main distributors in Eastern Shan area, and has 1 Telenor showroom in Tachileik so far. Rapid expansion of the network indicates the increase number of POS, distributors and showrooms in Eastern Shan.
As part of its network expansion, more than 50 Telenor employees joined its traditional “Blue Wave” activities in Tachileik and Kyaing Tone, meeting customers and dealers on the streets of the cities to introduce the service and gather feedback on customer experience. Additionally, as part of nationwide ‘SIM Registration Days’, Telenor employees also explained registration process and benefits, and helped users to register right away. Famous vocalists including R Zar Ni, Bo Phyu, PoPo, Zaya and Telenor’s Karaoke champion Aung Htet Khaing joined the entertainment held as part of Blue Wave activities.
