Telenor expands 4G network tothree more major cities in Myanmar

  • Aim to launch more cities in 2017 

Telenor Myanmar Limited (“Telenor”) this week celebratestheexpansion of its 4G network to three more major cities in Bago Region. Theexpansion of 4G network to Pyay, Bago and Taunggu is followed by the success of Telenor’s 4G launch in Nay Pyi Taw last July.

Telenor marked the expansion of 4G network to Pyay on 20 December. As part of the celebration, Telenor employees were out on the streets, engaged directly withcustomers and dealers on the streets to introduce the service. Additionally, Telenor offered free 500MB for customers who swapped their old SIM with high-speed capable ‘USIM’. Concurrently,in an effort to reinforce Telenor’s nationwide ‘SIM Registration Days’, Telenor employees also explained registration process and benefits, and helped users to register right away. Telenor will celebrate the expansion of 4G network to Bago and Taunggu on 23 and 24 December respectively.


“There has been a “hyper-growth” of data adoption in Myanmar and we are witnessing higher demand for mobile data. Today, more than 64% of our customers are data users. Expansion of our 4G services to more cities underscores one of our commitments to delivering the best data network experience for our customers. We will expand our 4G network to a few more cities in the coming months,” said Lars Erik Tellmann, Chief Executive Officer at Telenor Myanmar.

To date, Telenor has invested USD 1.5 billion into Myanmar, and anticipate to continue spending to improve coverage and quality, and roll out 4G services. “Award of 1800 MHz spectrum during the first quarter of 2017 will pave way for “real 4G” with extra high speed capacity,” Tellmann said.

 Telenor Myanmar today serves its customers 2G, 3G and 4G services with spectrum allocations of 900MHz and 2100 MHz.Telenor is Myanmar’s largest and fastest growing data network, with coverage in all States, Regions, territories and even remote areas in Myanmar, spanning close to 90% of total townships in Myanmar.
