Telenor’s 61 Lighthouses across the country will help rural communities to utilize opportunities available online
providing safe Internet training to the remote areas narrow the gap of digital literacy rate between urban and rural community
Telenor Myanmar’s Lighthouses have begun a series of ‘Safe Internet’ education awareness sessions for youths and school children in remote and rural areas across Myanmar.
“Our Lighthouses have already been doing a good jobin promoting digital literary and helping rural and urban communities to access the wide range of beneficial information available on the Internet.As our Lighthouses are situated in 12 states and regions, and Nay Pyi Taw, it is a great advantage for us to reach to youths and children in more rural areas to give firsthand knowledge on the safe and effective use of the internet using our in-house ‘Be Smart, Use Heart’ educational video series. We are counting on our Lighthouses’ contributions in achieving our ambition of educating at least 70,000 youths and students by the end of this year,” said Min Thu, Head of Business Sustainability at Telenor Myanmar.
Telenor conducted two batches of training for Lighthouse entrepreneurs in late-September and mid-October respectively. The Lighthouse entrepreneurs have been trained to deliver topics such as benefits of using Internet (educational purpose), potential risks on using Internet such as information theft, cyber bulling, cyber grooming, sexting and hate speech, and tips for staying safe online.
“Nowadays children are more digitally skillful than their older generation but their use of internet is limited to social media and games only just because they don’t have proper knowledge on using internet beneficially. Delivering safe internet knowledge to students can ensure that they use internet safely and responsibly. They are then aware of educational opportunities online and how much their online personal safety are important. The interactive questions in the videos help them remember the key points and apply the knowledge in their daily life,” said Ko Zaw Zaw Win, Lighthouseentrepreneur from Pyawbwe.
Telenor’s Lighthouses are social enterprises that are helping narrow rural and urban digital divide in Myanmar. Telenor and Myanmar ICT for Development Organisation (MIDO) partner for establishing Lighthouses in Myanmar.
