How to stay safe online

Telenor Myanmar has been focusing on building awareness and skills around online safety in Myanmar for many years. While we continue investing in data protection and security, there are also steps you as a customer can take to stay safe online.


Online safety has been a key priority for Telenor for years, focusing both on creating awareness on common online harms such as cyberbullying, fake news and privacy risks, as well as building resilience and capability among children, youth and first-time internet users. What can you as an internet user do to ensure a safer online experience?

 

Stay Safe Online

 

Step one: Familiarize yourself about internet
Staying safe online starts with being familiar with what risks exist. Telenor has developed a parent guidebook which can help you talk about the internet and online safety with younger family members. The content can be accessed in Myanmar language here.

 

Step two: Build basic skills with your kids
Understanding risks online is important to address the various issues including cyberbullying to identity theft. Together with UNICEF and Parent Zone, Telenor has developed a global training program, DigiWorld aimed at children, their caregivers, and teachers, to build the basic skills required to stay safe online. Step three: Use encrypted services and apps for sensitive calls
Voice calls and SMS going over the mobile network are in general secure ways of communicating. Studies show most mobile users will use voice/SMS services especially in emergencies and in times of crisis to be sure to reach their intended recipient. However, voice and SMS services are unencrypted. For your own privacy and comfort, you can consider adding an additional layer of security by using an encrypted voice or messaging service such as Signal, Telegram or Viber

We all have a shared responsibility for ensuring a safe internet experience for all users specially the most vulnerable, both by creating awareness on common risks and through building resilience and understanding of tools that can help keep them stay safe online.
